Only animal studies have been produced so far but indications are that HBO may be useful where a CT scan shows surgical possibilities are limited.

HBO may be an alternative to stenting or bypass surgery in certain cases. It appears that a 20 to 30 treatment regime is required.

There are already several human studies with promising results - an exciting area!

HBO may improve outcomes of other treatments and the Trust believes further research is required in this area.

This may be a viable alternative to hip replacement, particularly in younger patients and/or where trauma is involved. It may also extend the life of hip replacements.

A study in Israel indicates that 60+ HBO treatments are required.

This could have a significant impact on costs and the on-going quality of life of the patient.

HBO for chronic neurologic impairment post CVA

HBO for chronic neurologic impairment post CVA

It is known that brain tissue healing is most active in the immediate and medium term post-stroke period and reduces significantly by 12 months to the point where the affected tissue becomes largely anaerobic.

It has been established that with HBO therapy that oxygen uptake in these tissues can occur at up to 24 months post-stroke with beneficial improvements in function. If this can be clearly evidenced and its effects shown to be long term it could show improvements in the patient's quality of life and in reduced rehabilitation costs.

The Trust believes this research should be pursued as a matter of urgency. A large, randomised, multi-centre trial is envisaged.
