Addiction and Hyperbaric Oxygen | | Print | |
Researchers have been working for years to try to understand why people become addicted to drugs and alcohol. Recently many psychiatrists and psychologists have come to realize many of these people have brain injuries and they further injure their brain with the drug and alcohol abuse. A main reason why people go back to their addictive patterns is because their brain is damaged and without giving it time and the proper tools to heal, they are doomed to repeat their old patterns.
Cognitive Neuropsychologists recognize that the study of dysfunctional behavior can help identify the component operations that underlie normal cognitive performance. If behavior depends upon processing within certain brain structure, then damage to this structure should disrupt the behavior. Daniel G. Amen, MD has illustrated that many of his psychiatric patients, including drug and alcohol addicts, suffer from brain damage in the book, “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life”. Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBOT) is a tool your brain needs to heal itself. HBOT is well known in helping patients who have suffered traumatic brain injuries. Originally discovered to help divers recover from the bends, HBOT has now been proven to deliver Oxygen to the brain in places not possible when breathing air at sea level. A simple brain-imaging scan can show the areas of the brain that have been damaged from the person’s addictive behavior. These scans show the areas of the brain that are not getting enough blood flow. After 20-40 HBO treatments it is obvious (as seen in the pictures below) that the blood flow in the patients brain has increased. This supplies the cells with the needed nutrients they need to heal themselves. After only 10 treatments many patients report better memory, higher energy levels and an overall sense of well-being.
