Abstract : Anemia of diabetic nephropathy patients increases morbidity and mortality. Anemia of diabetic nephropathy occurs because of erythropoietin impairment. We investigate whether hyperbaric oxygen improved anemia through erythropoietin inducement. Twenty patients of stage 1 nephropathy (incipient nephropathy) of type 2 diabetes mellitus were chosen by inclusion criteria as subjects, which divided randomly into control and treatment groups. All subjects were examined twice in the morning for physical and laboratory variables, such as serum erythropoietin, complete blood count, urinalysis, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, C-peptide, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, urine micro albumin, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, AST and ALT. Subjects in treatment group were given hyperbaric oxygen 2.4 ATA 100% O2 with 3x30 minutes by 2x5 minutes interval air brake inhalation, everyday for 5 days. Statistical analysis t test was significant with p < 0.05. Erythropoietin concentration of treatment group increased significantly compared with control group (p=0.001). Erythrocyte count and hemoglobin concentration of treatment group (p=0.400; p=0.412) did not differ significantly compared to control group (p=0.186; p=0.179). Hyperbaric oxygen improved anemia due to erythropoietin secretion.
