Brief Report: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Clinical Trial.
Ten autistic children participated in the study. There was no control group in the study. The children received 80 HBOT sessions over a given period of time.
The researchers found that all 10 children in the study showed an improvement of 2 points in the clinician-rated CGI-I scale. Parents also reported several areas of improvement in the children.
The study also looked at the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on cytokine levels in the participants. The study participants had normal baseline cytokine levels. No significant changes in cytokine levels were observed in the autistic children during the trial.
The authors state the study findings indicate that HBOT does not affect cytokine levels in autistic children. They also suggest that the behavior improvements observed during the trial were not a result of changes in cytokines.
